History of ECP&DA

In 1968 the Erewash Canal Preservation & Development Association (ECP&DA) was formed in response to a threat by the British Waterways Board to close the canal. In the following five years the ECP&DA not only saved the canal but also restored Langley Bridge lock and the Great Northern basin and swing bridge. This was celebrated by a grand opening ceremony and their first boat rally at Langley Mill in 1973.

Visit Sandiacre Lock Cottages

Built in 1779, Sandiacre is the only surviving lock cottage and toll house on the Erewash Canal. Leased from BWB in 1969, and now owned by ECP&DA, the cottages have been sympathetically restored and managed by ECP&DA volunteers. They have been opened to the public as a museum since 1991.

Visit the Erewash Canal

Get away from the crowds, bring your boat up the Erewash Canal and meet friendly people. Visit and have tea at the Lock Cottages. There is plenty of wildlife to see – heron, little egret, kingfisher, otter, buzzards overhead. Good fishing is also available. Good facilities are available at the head of navigation at Langley Mill, boatyard, shops, restaurants, pubs etc.
